Fall is right around the corner. I was noticing birds collecting more materials and preparing their homes for winter. Goldfinches are eating most of my sunflower seeds from the flower heads, and there are more and more elm leaves in the yard everyday. Can it be that time already?! As they say time waits for no one. I wish time would wait just for a day because I’m exhausted.

“How did it get so late so soon? It’s night before it’s afternoon. December is here before it’s June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon?” -Dr. Seuss

I’m constantly saying this to myself….(well, the first part) but I suppose it is because I’m doing something that I enjoy. I have to admit that cutting flowers can be time consuming. I have a tendency to look at a bloom way too long. I stare at them, especially the dahlias and am amazed that each one is different, unique, individually created by a magnificent Artist. I realize though that it is good for me though, to slow down a little. Whose life isn’t a little hectic?

Winter will be here soon and then it will be time to really slow down and rest. We all need a rest. The ground needs a rest, animals need to rest, plants need to rest. Before we can rest, we have to prep for the long winter’s nap. Dahlias have to be dug up for storage, drip lines pulled up, cover crops planted, fall bulbs and garlic needs to go in, and just an overall clean up.

Some people don’t like winter very much, and I am not one to go jumping for joy when it we have a foot of snow, but I would like to put all garden things down and take a little break. Honestly, I would love to get out my dusty old sewing machine and sew a few quilt blocks! What do you enjoy doing during the winter you don’t normally do?
