I decided to take a little walk down memory lane as we begin our 4th year flower farming and catch you up on a little part of our story. I got the text from my husband a few days before Valentines Day in 2021 which said, “I found a high tunnel on Facebook, should we get it? I responded with, “does a pig oink?!” I didn’t know jack about hoop houses, but I did know someone who did…our good friend Joanna!
We had just moved from South Carolina a year prior and we had volunteered with a couple at their Strawberry U-Pick farm (Wabi Sabi) for a few seasons. They had high tunnels! Their set up is amazing and they have a system down after over ten years, so I sent Joanna a text that said, “should we buy a high tunnel? Its used and its $1000.” In about 3 seconds, I read her text- “YES!!!!”
Four years later, I am SO glad I went with my gut that day. It was a great find at $1000 used and has proven to be a great investment. We did have to take it down and haul it home, but it was worth it. We have used it to shelter Ranunculus, Eucalyptus, Carrots, Bells of Ireland, Monster 6 ft Celosia, Stock and more. I didn’t know exactly at the time what I would use it for. It was a Valentine’s Day sort of gift I don’t think I ever would have asked for, but very glad I received it!
If you are in the market for a high tunnel, I do recommend one with a pitched roof line. They are called “Gothic” style and they will shed snow and rain alot easier than the one we have. We have applied for a grant for another high tunnel, but haven’t heard back from the old Gov yet. Fingers crossed!
